Performing Arts Programs

The Performing Arts Department at Williams Bay High School provides instructional programs in instrumental and vocal music. Students in band and choir ensembles study music theory, performance techniques, and ensemble collaboration across various musical genres. These courses give students opportunities to develop technical proficiency, practice discipline, and participate in school performances throughout the academic year.

In addition to music coursework, the department offers study in theater arts and musical production. Course offerings cover acting, stage movement, vocal performance, and technical production including stagecraft and lighting design. These classes allow students to gain experience both onstage and behind the scenes while preparing for school theatrical productions.

Courses Offered

  • Grades: 11-12

    AP Music Theory is a full-year course designed to give advanced high school musicians an opportunity to dramatically expand their musical understanding. Skills taught during this course range from basic symbols and notation, through honing aural skills and musical analysis. The amount of material covered is substantial and the course moves quickly. This course is designed for students who are looking for a greater understanding of music theory and have hopes to take the AP Music Theory exam for credit.

  • Grades: 6-8

    The Middle School Band program expands upon foundational instrumental skills through the study of intermediate concert literature. Students refine tone production, rhythmic precision, sight reading, and ensemble dynamics across a variety of musical styles. The program emphasizes collaborative performance skills and includes multiple public concerts throughout the academic year.

  • Grades: 6-8

    The Middle School Choir program focuses on developing healthy vocal technique, pitch accuracy, and multi part singing in a supportive group environment. Students study fundamental music theory, sight singing, and vocal expression while working with diverse musical repertoire. Members showcase their learning through performance opportunities and school concerts.

  • Grades: 9-12

    Join us for a dynamic and engaging experience in our Concert Choir, where you'll work collaboratively as an ensemble to produce a diverse range of vocal selections, including Pop, Classical, Folk, Jazz, Spirituals, Musicals, and more. This course is designed to, not only enhance your vocal and musical theory skills, but also to provide numerous opportunities for performance both within our school and throughout the community. Throughout the year, you will have the chance to showcase your talents in various concerts, such as the Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and the Annual Pops Concert. Additionally, we participate in community events, including caroling at assisted living facilities and at places such as the Grand Geneva. These events are always followed by treats.

    To help you develop your personal musical abilities, required lessons are essential for honing your skills. Whether you are a seasoned singer or a newcomer, we warmly invite you to become part of our Choir family—everyone is welcome! For those eager to explore even more performance opportunities, we also offer options like Honors Choir, Solo Ensemble, and additional community solo and group events.

  • Grades: 6th

    Grade 6 General Music offers students a comprehensive overview of musical concepts, music history, world music traditions, and basic music theory. Through listening analysis, practical exploration, and creative projects, students deepen their understanding of how music is created and structured.

  • Grades: 9-12

    Through the careful preparation and performance of meaningful and significant literature written and arranged for jazz ensemble, students will gain a higher understanding and deep appreciation of jazz music as a viable means of artistic expression. It is demanded that students work continuously to develop their technical proficiency on each of their respective instruments in order to further the ensemble as a collective whole. Several additional playing opportunities will be made available to any students interested: Honor bands, Solo & Ensemble Festival, Community Events, etc.

  • Grades: 9-12

    Through the careful preparation and performance of meaningful and significant literature written and arranged for wind and percussion instruments, students will gain a higher understanding and deep appreciation of music as a viable means of artistic expression. It is demanded that students work continuously to develop their technical proficiency on each of their respective instruments in order to further the ensemble as a collective whole. In addition to the band’s normal curriculum, the band also lends itself to perform and play a supporting role at various school-related events such as athletic events and commencement. The band also marches in at least one parade during the school year. Lessons are also required. Several additional playing opportunities will be made available to any students interested: Honors bands, Solo & Ensemble Festival, etc.

  • Grades: 9-12

    This course offers an engaging, hands-on experience in various aspects of theatre, including acting, costuming, small-scale set design, make-up, directing, and much more. Students will not only learn the basics of theatre terminology and staging but will also delve into the vibrant and diverse realm of theatrical arts. We will emphasize the significance of props, acting choices, and explore how these decisions impact a performance. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to analyze various performances, discussing their opinions on what made them effective or lacking. Throughout the course, numerous performance opportunities will be provided, allowing students to apply their skills and showcase their creativity in a supportive environment. Whether you're new to theatre or a seasoned performer, we invite you to experience the joy and creativity of the theatrical arts in a vibrant and welcoming environment!

  • Grades: 9-12

    Vocal Jazz is an exciting and competitive ensemble dedicated exclusively to the art of Jazz and its vocal elements. In this dynamic group, you'll dive into the intricate harmonies that define Jazz music while mastering your own vocal part, allowing you to truly experience the rich “crunch” that characterizes this genre. Our focus will also include improvisation, helping you become more comfortable and expressive with your unique voice. Throughout the year, the group will showcase its talent at various performances, including the Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and Pops Concert. Additionally, we welcome requests from the community for special performance opportunities, such as caroling or singing at paid events. Vocal Jazz rehearses two days a week before school, with potential adjustments based on enrollment. Students interested in joining Vocal Jazz are highly encouraged to enroll in Concert Choir as well, ensuring experience and vocal skills.

  • Grades: 4k-5

    The 4K through 5th Grade General Music program introduces foundational musical concepts through singing, rhythm exercises, movement, and basic instrument exploration. Students develop listening skills, music literacy, and creative expression in an active classroom setting. Throughout the school year, students showcase their progress by participating in multiple general music concerts for the school community.

  • Grades: 5th

    The 5th Grade Band program offers students their first opportunity to learn a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument within a full ensemble setting. Instruction focuses on essential instrument techniques, tone production, and reading standard musical notation. Students learn how to rehearse as a group and prepare instrumental pieces for school performances.
